About the clinic

Shaping manuscripts into publish-ready books.

Chicago Book Clinic is one team for writing, editing, publishing and marketing — based in Chicago, working with authors across the United States.

Our story

Where it started

Every strong idea deserves the chance to become a well-crafted, professionally prepared book.

Chicago Book Clinic was built on a simple belief: every strong idea deserves the chance to become a well-crafted, professionally prepared book. What began as a focused effort to support authors with editing and manuscript refinement gradually grew into a full-service platform designed to guide writers through the entire journey — from early drafts to finished, publish-ready work.

In the early stages, the focus was on helping authors improve their writing. Many writers had powerful stories, valuable knowledge or deeply personal experiences, but their manuscripts often lacked structure, clarity or professional polish. By working closely with authors, understanding their voice and refining their content, Chicago Book Clinic became known for bringing clarity to complex ideas and helping writers present their work in a stronger, more effective way.

Beyond the manuscript

Writing and editing alone were not enough.

As the needs of authors grew, so did the scope of the clinic. It became clear that writing and editing alone were not enough. Authors needed guidance beyond the manuscript — formatting, publishing preparation, positioning, and an understanding of how their book fits into the market. In response, Chicago Book Clinic expanded its services to provide a more complete and structured support system, so authors can move forward with confidence at every stage.

What sets Chicago Book Clinic apart is its commitment to clarity and guidance. Writing and publishing can feel overwhelming, especially for first-time authors.

By simplifying each step, explaining the process in a straightforward way and providing hands-on support, the clinic removes uncertainty and replaces it with direction.

Today

A support system for aspiring and experienced authors alike.

Today, Chicago Book Clinic is a support system for aspiring and experienced authors alike. The approach stays consistent: clear communication, professional standards, and a focus on helping authors not just complete their books, but prepare them properly for real readers. Each project is treated with care, so the author's voice remains intact while the quality of the work is raised to meet publishing expectations.

Authors come to us at every stage — some starting with just an idea, others bringing in completed manuscripts that need refinement. In every case the goal is the same: to help authors move forward with confidence and turn their work into something they are proud to share. At its core, Chicago Book Clinic is not just a service provider. It is a place where ideas are developed, manuscripts are strengthened, and authors are guided toward completion with purpose and professionalism.

Chapter 04What sets us apart

Four things we hold to on every project.

Not a long list of promises.

  1. Clarity

Each step is explained in plain language before it happens. You always know what stage you are at and what comes next.

  2. Guidance

We recommend the right service for the stage you are at instead of asking you to work it out yourself, and we stay hands-on from the first call to the finished book.

  3. One team

Writing, editing, design, publishing and marketing are handled in one place, so nothing gets lost between a writer, a designer and a publisher who have never spoken.

  4. Your voice stays intact

Whether we are ghostwriting from scratch or refining your draft, the book stays yours — your ideas, your voice, and full ownership of the manuscript.

From a first idea to a finished book.

Authors at every stage, and across genres.

From a first idea to a finished manuscript.

  1. First-time authors

Starting from an idea, with no expectation that you already know how publishing works.

  2. Professionals and business owners

Turning expertise into a book that represents your work.

  3. Memoir and life-story writers

Personal stories, told in your own voice.

  4. Fiction writers

Novels and stories taken from draft to a finished, published book.

  5. Children's book authors

Stories where words, illustration and design have to work together.

  6. Authors with a finished manuscript

Ready for editing, formatting, a cover and publishing.

Chapter 06How a project starts

From a first message to work on your book.

Four steps, in the order they happen.

  1. Step 01

    Enquiry

Send an idea, a few notes, a partial draft or a finished manuscript through the contact form, by phone or by email.

  2. Step 02

    Consultation

A free call with a publishing consultant to understand your idea, goals, audience and the stage you are at.

  3. Step 03

    Plan

A clear recommendation of the services your book needs and a practical roadmap, put in writing for you to review before anything starts.

  4. Step 04

    Work begins

Writing, editing or design starts on the agreed plan, and you review the work at each stage before it moves to the next.

The whole route, from discovery to publishing, is set out on the process page.

Chapter 07What we will not do

Four things we will not do

Said plainly, so you know where you stand before the first call.

  • We will not

Start work before you have approved a written plan.

You get a recommendation and a practical roadmap in writing first.

  • We will not

Quote a price before we understand your book.

Pricing depends on the length of the book, where it starts and the services it needs, so it follows a conversation.

  • We will not

Take any share of your copyright or royalties.

The manuscript and everything made for it are yours.

  • We will not

Call anything final before you have seen it.

Every stage comes to you for approval: the outline, the chapters, the edits, the cover and the files.
