Overview

For a family honoring a parent or founder, a company documenting its own history, or a subject who wants their story told but is not the one writing it. The book is built from interviews with the subject, or with the people who knew them, plus whatever records, letters, and archives exist.

We write biographies for clients in Chicago and across the United States, with a clear outline agreed before drafting so everyone involved knows what the book will be.

Process

A simple 6-step process that keeps your book moving forward

The same clear sequence on every project: you always know what happens next.

  1. Discovery

We start by understanding your idea, goals, audience, and the stage you are currently at.

  2. Planning

The structure, content, and overall approach are organized so everything has clarity from the beginning.

  3. Strategy

We create a clear direction for your project, including the right service recommendations and a practical roadmap.

  4. Creation

We begin the writing, development, editing, or design work based on your project needs.

  5. Refinement

The work is polished, reviewed, and prepared to meet professional publishing standards.

  6. Publishing & Growth

Once the work is ready, we guide you toward publishing, presentation, and the next steps for author growth.

Before we start

Before we start

From scattered ideas to a finished manuscript. Good biography writing starts with the decisions behind the work. Here is what to think about, what to prepare, and how to make your reviews more useful.

Note

Start with the idea.
We handle the pages.

  1. Know what the book is about

Decide what holds it together: a central question, a change the reader goes through, a practical framework, or a story someone needs to hear. That thread gives each chapter a reason to exist and makes the writing easier to judge as it arrives.

  2. Give your voice a reference point

Share a few paragraphs you have written, a recording of you talking, or an email that sounds like you. Tell us the phrases you use and the tone you want to avoid. A clear voice reference keeps the writing yours from the first chapter.

  3. Approve the structure before the chapters

An outline is the cheapest place to fix a book. Review the sequence and the gaps, and ask for a sample section before the whole manuscript is drafted. Changing direction at the outline stage costs days; at the end it costs months.

Come with an idea. Leave with a clear direction.

Bring your current material, your intended readers, a few references you like, and any deadline that matters. We will talk through the work and confirm what belongs in your scope.

Questions

Everything you need to know

Common questions about biography writing.

Does the subject need to be alive?

No. Many biographies are written from the memories of family and colleagues together with letters, photographs, and records. We agree the sources at the start.

Who approves the book?

Whoever commissioned it. The outline is approved before drafting begins and chapters are reviewed as they are completed.

Can the book be kept private?

Yes. Some biographies are published; others are printed for a family or a company only. We can help with either.

Do you work outside Chicago?

Yes. We serve clients in Chicago and across the United States, with interviews by phone or video.

Next steps

What happens after you get in touch

Three steps, and nothing starts until you have seen a plan in writing.

  1. A consultant reads it

A publishing consultant looks at what you sent and gets back to you within one business day.

  2. A free consultation

A call about your book, your goals and where it stands. No pressure to commit on the call.

  3. A written plan and quote

What your book needs and in what order, with a quote in writing, specific to your book, before anything starts.
